Lucky Bones in Cape May: Comfort Food, Coastal Vibes, and a Few Misses

Lucky Bones in Cape May

When it comes to dining in Cape May, NJ, Lucky Bones Back Water Grille has built a reputation as a casual go-to spot for locals and visitors alike. On our recent visit, we had a chance to put it to the test—and while it came close to perfection, a few details held it back from earning a full 5/5 stars.

First Impressions & Atmosphere

Walking into Lucky Bones, you immediately sense its rustic, nautical-themed setup. However, the décor felt dated and a bit dark, giving the room a musty vibe. While this may be part of the intended ambiance, a brighter, refreshed look could easily elevate the dining experience and make the space more inviting.

Service That Shines

The highlight of the evening was without question the wait staff. From start to finish, the service was attentive, warm, and efficient. Our server checked in at all the right times, making sure drinks were topped off and that we had everything we needed. If excellent hospitality is important to you, Lucky Bones delivers.

Starters Worth the Visit

The meal opened strong with two standout dishes:

  • Lobster Bisque – Creamy, rich, and full of flavor, this bowl was easily one of the best items of the night.

  • Clams in Buttery Broth – Served with homemade bread, the broth was delicious enough to savor on its own. A true Cape May gem!

We also tried the Honey Barbecue Wings, which came coated in a tangy, slightly sweet sauce that balanced nicely without being overwhelming.

Entrées: Satisfying and Well Done

For mains, I went with the Grilled Chicken Sandwich. Simple, hearty, and cooked just right. My partner ordered the Bacon-Wrapped Scallops, which offered a nice mix of savory and smoky flavors. Both entrées were satisfying and worth recommending.

The one weak spot? The French fries. They arrived a little cold, which was surprising considering how well everything else was served. While it wasn’t a deal breaker, it was noticeable.

Overall Experience

All in all, Lucky Bones was a solid dining experience:

●⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5 stars)
● Strengths: Amazing staff, flavorful starters (especially the lobster bisque and clams), well-prepared entrées.

We’ll definitely be back to give Lucky Bones another shot. With just a few adjustments, it could easily reach 5-star territory.

SweetScenes Takeaway

If you’re in Cape May and craving hearty coastal comfort food with excellent service, Lucky Bones should be on your list. Just don’t be surprised if the atmosphere feels more old-school than modern.
